Question #1 for February: ----- Original Message -----
To: Alice@AliceAnswers.com hi alice im thinking about having sex with my boyfriend for valentines day, im scare that i can't take the pain. What should i do? And what can i do to protect my self from pregnancy. I am 15 Alice Answers:
From: Alice Edwards I would like to give you some good advice. I think it is too risky to have sex at your age for several reasons: you could get STD's - sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS, you could get pregnant and spoil any chance you and your child would have for an education a career and a decent life, you could, and likely will loose respect for yourself, and if you disrespect yourself, how can you expect him to have any respect for you? I know this sounds like a preachy teachy Mom talking, but I have been around the block a few times, and I know that at your age it is hard to see the potential for disaster, but it is real. My wish for you is that you will do things that are good for you, that lift you up, that build you up, that add to you becoming a healthy, responsible, respectable woman. Please take my advice and give him a flower for Valentine's Day. Please let me know what you decide and ask more questions if you need help with anything else. Take care. Alice
Question #2 for February:
To: Alice@AliceAnswers.com Dear Alice, Hey, I need you to answer some questions for me, by today please. The first question that I half to ask you is about aids. Here I go. What are other names for aids? What is the scientific name for aids? How does a person become infected with aids? What is the treatment and prevention of aids? Where is aids common? And what are 5 interesting facts about aids?Could you please answer these question on today's date of 4/5/02. thankyou Sincerely Alice Answers:
From: Alice Edwards Dear (name removed), Sorry about that I just got your message a minute ago, I was not able to check my email yesterday. I am not a scientist, nor am I an expert on AIDS, but will give you all I know, which I learned in college biology class. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is the scientific name and as far as I know there are no other names, except for possible street names which I am not familiar with. There are many ways to become infected, generally through the exchange of bodily fluids in direct contact. During anal and vaginal intercourse, sharing contaminated needles for injecting drugs, transfusion of contaminated blood products (this is very rare now because of screening procedures), during fetal development, childbirth, breast feeding, accidental punctures with contaminated needles by health workers. All persons with a positive blood test for antibody to AIDS should regard themselves as carriers of the virus. Whether one has symptoms or not, they can transmit the infection to others. A really good book to read is "A Romance to Die For: The Startling Truth About Women, Sex, and AIDS" by Dr Fluer Sack, Health Communications, Deerfield Beach, Fla 1992. This book presents the information in a simple, straightforward manner. I know almost nothing about treatment except that they are not effective for all persons with the virus, there is no cure. The best prevention is abstinence. If you find a life long partner, I recommend both persons being tested before any sexual relations take place, and best yet within the context of marriage. Some condoms are suppose to reduce the risk, but I wouldn't bet my life on them. Nothing is 100% safe. Some statistics to consider which are about 3 years old: 1 in every 100 sexually active adults worldwide between 15 and 49 is infected, and only 1 in 10 knows it. India has 3 to 5 million infected people, making it the country with the most infected people in the world. Aids is the leading cause of death for all americans 25-44. I hope this helps. Now I have a few questions, are you writing a paper for school? How old are you, I always ask this, it helps me to know the age and frame of reference of the person asking the questions.
